
COMMUNITY LINKS EMPOWERED ABAGENA IDPs WITH SOLAR ELECTRICITY, COOKING GADGETS

A non-governmental organisation –community Links Friday 15th May 2020 visited the Abagena IDP camp in Benue State, where it has introduced a cooking device for the benefit of the camp occupants.
In her speech, the Executive Director of Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiative (CLHEI), Dr. Helen Teghtegh empathized with the Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) for staying away from their comfort zones for over two years now, no thanks to the herdsmen invasion of Benue State. She appreciated the partnership support from Christian Aid, for the provision of solar powered light at the camp and the cooking gadgets meant to help in the fight against global warming. She also said the provision of the cooking gadgets will minimize the cases of occupants who are prone to attacks from reptiles and rapist. Although, Dr. Teghtegh charge the beneficiaries to be of good behaviour and make judicious use of the opportunities presented to them on the camp.
On his part, Tabat Baba of Christian Aid appreciated Community Links for their support to the IDPs through provision of amenities like solar lights, cooking gadgets and the training of the crises victims in Garri and starch processing. He pledges his organization’s support to Community Links and the IDPs.
A representative of the Benue State Ministry of Water Resources and Environment appreciated the organizations for providing the gadgets (solar lights and cooking stoves) which will help in fighting deforestation that has serious negative effects on the environment.
Justina Jime who spoke on behalf of the IDPs said community Links has been helpful overtime at the camp. She said they are enjoying un-interrupted power supply courtesy of the solar electricity provision and many other laudable projects which are made possible by Community Links.
On his part, the Camp Coordinator James Iorkyaa thanked Community Links for the gesture. He acknowledged that the organisation has always supported the IDPs in their livelihood, noting that the latest initiative will help in the security and safety of the Internally Displaced Persons.
Highlight of occasion was a demonstration on the usage of the cooking stove constructed by Engr. Abel Gbuusu. In his explanation, Engr. Gbuusu said the gadget is “rice husk brisket dependent” and it has the capacity to serve households in their cooking demands. He also said the gadget has duration of at least five years, if properly maintained.
A total of sixty cooking stoves were distributed. Dr. Teghtegh said this is not enough as she calls for support to make the gadgets go round to the over a thousand households currently occupying the Abagena camp.
