BENUE STATE JUDICIAL PANEL OF INQUIRY INTO HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS BY THE POLICE, ESPECIALLY THE SPECIAL ANTI ROBBERY SQUAD (SARS).
PUBLIC NOTICE.
1. This is to inform the general public that the Governor of Benue state, His Excellence Samuel I. Ortom, in furtherance of the directive of the National Economic Council. (NEC), and the powers derived under Benue state panel of inquiry, Cap40, Laws of Benue state 2004, and all other powers incidental to his office, has set up an 8-man judicial panel of inquiry to investigate allegations/complaints of human rights violations by the police in Benue state, including police brutality and extra-judicial killings by the special Anti Robbery squard (SARS) in the state.
2. The terms of reference of the panel are:
(a) Receive and investigate complaints of police brutality, human rights violations or related extra -judicial killings.
(b) Evaluate evidence presented to it and other surrounding circumstances and draw conclusions as to the validity of the complaints. And
(c) Recommend compensation and other remedial measures where appropriate.
3. The panel has six months within which to submit it’s report.
4. In furtherance of the foregoing, any person or group of persons with any complaints touching on any area of focus of the panel may submit such complaints addressed to the secretary of the panel at the office of the secretary to the state Government (SSG) for consideration. Every such complaint should be endorsed with a contact address, including phone number (if available) and shall be supported with verifiable evidence.
