Pre-Trial Rights of Suspects in Nigeria

The Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act [ACJA] are replete with provisions on pre-trial rights of suspects. The purpose is to ensure quality of justice delivery in line with International Human Rights standards contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Charter on human and people’s Rights. The observance and effective protection of the rights depend to a large extent on the civility or otherwise of the officials responsible for the protection of the rights.
