End Sars: Amnesty International asks Nigerian Authorities to drop charges against Imoleayo
In November 2020, Imoleayo Michael was taken from his home in Abuja at gunpoint in the middle of the night, two weeks after attending a protest to call for an end to SARS, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a Nigerian police force infamous for being corrupt and using torture and lethal tactics against members of the public.
While Imoleayo’s house was being searched, officers locked his wife, elderly mother and seven-month-old son in a room and disconnected the power supply to streetlights around it.
Taken from his family, Imoleayo was then cuffed, blindfolded and chained to a steel cabinet at the state security headquarters for 41 days and was interrogated five times. Forced to sleep on the bare floor, he suffered pneumonia as a result and was eventually released on bail in December 2020.
Imoleayo’s trial continues on 29 March 2022 – and he needs as many people as possible to sign Amnesty’s petition ahead of this date to fight for his freedom.
