NHFSS Assault on Members of the public: Benue State Police Command Condemns Action
By Prosper Okoye
The Benue State police command has condemned in totality the “barbaric and dehumanizing acts”, as well as the “unlawful assembly” of a group of men identified as Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services (NHFSS), reportedly seen on the streets of Makurdi on Tuesday this week, shaving the styled or coloured hair of residents they had accosted.
This was contained in a statement released on Thursday, by the police public relations officer, SP Anene Catherine, and it reads in part: “investigation reveals that on the 26th of April, 2022 a group of persons who assembled themselves unlawfully under the umbrella of NHFSS in the leadership of one Mr. Ajonya peter embarked on a rally to showcase themselves in some communities as a legal entity without notifying the police and without any authority to operate. In the course of the rally, they came across citizens going about their normal businesses and decided to cut the hair of these persons for reasons best known to them.”
The statement further mentioned that the leader of this movement, Mr. Ajonya peter and three other persons have been arrested and an investigation was still ongoing on the incident.
It was also noted that the Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP. Wale Abbas, while he commiserated with the victims at his office, assured them that the command under his watch would not allow lawlessness; hence the suspects arrested would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“The CP commended public-spirited persons who guided the victims to take lawful steps towards addressing this issue and pledged his commitment to handle issues promptly.” The statement read.
