The Managing Director, Benue Investment and Property Company Ltd, Barr Alex Ter Adum, PhD has urged the people of Benue state to exercise regularly in order to keep fit.
Dr Adum, gave this advice Friday when he Flaged-off BIPC Health Awareness Walk and also led staff of the company and other organizations on a road walk from BIPC office along Makurdi-Alidade road to IBB Square, Makurdi.

While he announced that BIPC will be organizing the exercise once in every month, Adum advised the staff to be doing it daily on their own. He advised people to embrace a positive life encapsulated in DREAMS, which is Dieting, Recreation, Exercise, and Medicals and Socialization.

In a remark, a medical expert, Dr Henry Ijabo of the State Ministry of Health attributed the frequency of many people falling sick these days to lack of exercise, asserting that exercise can extend one’s life by 20-30 years.
Delivering a Health Talk to enlighten people on public health issues, a Specialist at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) Makurdi, Dr Terver Igba, identified Hypertension, Diabetes and Hepatitis as major killers of the contemporary time.

According to him, Hypertension can be survived for a long time if managed well with healthy lifestyle by exercising at least 3 times a day and proper diet.
Dr Igba cautioned that people should avoid eating junk foods that constitute unhealthy diet but eat more fruits and vegetables, eat one piece of meat at a time especially red meat, avoid sedentary life styles, avoid excessive alcohol and smoking.
He said research in 2019 showed that about 32.9% of global death was caused by stroke and 17.91% of death was as a result of Hypertension.

He therefore advised that people should start watching their weight once they are approaching 30 years, adding that the risk increases as people reach 50 years.
Also speaking on health issues, a Psychiatrist at BSU, Dr Omidiji Oloruniyo, cautioned people to eschew depression, alcohol and other unhealthy habits, arguing that substance abuse and depression are the major causes of mental health challenge.
Highlight of the event was the diagnosis of people for BP, Diabetes, FB sugar, Hepatitis, HIV and other health challenges.
