Inadequate rainfall in Benue State is sending fears to farmers who are saying, could lead to food crisis even in states where the majority of the residents are farmers.
According to a press investigation, most yam and groundnut farmers that constitute the first wave of farming when the rains return are yet to plant them this year. Farmer, Denen Isaiah says in many areas, the amount of rainfall is not adequate for planting, due to the nature of the land.
While many are yet to plant, others have lost their seedlings to the scorching sun in the state, says Okehe Juagba who resides in Saav area of Guma Local Government Area. They farmers are stressing the effects of climate change on the environment, calling for more awareness for farmers to begin to appreciate the realities of the time.
