I stayed up to see the second and last American presidential debate before the polls on November 3, 2020. On the night, President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden debated for some 90 minutes at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

The face-off between the duo included substantive discussions and sharing of their perspectives on a number of topics including the response to the coronavirus pandemic, immigration and how each would handle climate change and racial inequality. Joe Biden also denied any wrong doing with his son, Hunter Biden’s, business dealings in Ukraine and China. He said he has released his tax returns for the past 22 years and wonders why President Trump hasn’t released his. President Trump argued that he prepays his taxes and that soon, he’d release his books to the public.

Kirsten Welker, the Moderator of the debate, did very well even though vintage President Donald Trump had attacked her on Twitter over the weekend. Twitting, President Trump wrote; “she has always been terrible and unfair, just like most of the Fake News reporters”. This isnt surprising because President Trump has fought with, denigrated and belittled members of the media throughout his tenure in office. Recall that after the first debate, Trump attacked Chris Wallace, that debate moderator.

During this debate, and unlike his usual combative and all-knowing temperament, President Donald Trump was calm, co-operative and not distruptive as he was in the first debate. And it is because of these, that he had a very good outing on the night. Joe Biden was also cooperative and respectful.

My major take from this debate is that President Donald Trump, perhaps too late, has proven that he is a listening president, at least based on this outing (the official second debate between him and Joe Biden was cancelled because he got sick with Coronavirus). For me, President Donald Trump’s behavior is impressive – because as president, he is supposed to listen to his Advisers and Americans and he did that!

Like President Donald Trump showed on the night, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, and other African presidents, must begin to understand that they are employees of the people and should, at all times, listen to those they have appointed to advise them and also the public opinion/pulse of their peoples.

Although I’m impressed with President Donald Trump’s outing, Joe Biden remains my favorite for the office of the President of America – because being the president of America (and the rest of the world) is more important than personally being on Twitter insulting everyone who opposes you and your administration.
