Prof. Joseph Tor Iorapuu, the 6th Vice Chancellor of the Benue State University Makurdi, assumed office on November, 11th, 2020. He has hitherto served the University as member, governing council.
Prof. Iorapuu is of the University of Jos, Department of Theatre and Film Arts, where he served as Dean Faculty of Arts until 2019; a position he occupied upon his end of tenure as the Head, Department of Theatre and Film Arts. The brilliant scholar was one of the key governorship contestants under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), before he stepped down for Governor Samuel Ortom, who emerged as the candidate in the build up to the 2019 general elections in Benue State.
Due to his academic resilience, research and successful varsity career, he assumed a professorial seat in 2011 at the age of 48. Prof. Iorapuu started his teaching career as a graduate Assistant after completing his first degree programme in 1989. Hitherto his degree programme, he attended the famous College of Education Katsina-Ala and is of the Government Secondary School Katsina-Ala alma mater.
Prof. Iorapuu has distinguished himself as an indisputable academic of great repute, having held and discharged his duties creditably in various positions he served. He has attended many workshops and conferences both locally and internationally. Over the course of his career, Iorapuu has contributed more than 30 reviewed articles in academic journals, 10 books for the curriculum and other creative works such as ‘April 1421’ published in 2007 and ‘The Ambulance is Ready’ still in the process of publication.
Due to his passion for community service and humanitarian work, he founded a Non-Governmental Organization-Youth Adolescent Reflection and Action Centre (YARAC) in 1999 which has carried out community outreaches across Plateau and Benue states to mention but two. Prof. Iorapuu remains a community mobilizer with about 14 students benefitting from his scholarship scheme at the university level.
Prof.Tor Iorapuu is a devout Catholic of the Knight of St. Mulumba (KSM) order. He is also a Fellow, Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA), Member, African Literature Association (ALA), Member Nigerian Participatory Research Network (NIPRANET), Member, National Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners (NANTAP), Member, Governing Council Popular Theatre Alliance (NPTA), Member Indo-Nigerian Film Association New Delhi India, Member Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Plateau State Chapter among several others.
Iorapuu is married to Dr. Nnenna Iorapuu, also an academic with the University of Jos. He hails from Aliade Mbalav, in Gwer East local government area of Benue State, north central Nigeria.
