On daily basis, issues of insecurity are reported in parts of the country. Banditry, kidnapping, herders/farmers and cult related killings have continued, despite huge security presence. This has raised fears and concerns. Some residents of Makurdi, the Benue State capital blame the crisis on the failure of the states. They say the situation is becoming worse.
According to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, there is a limit to which the states can maintain security. He says, it is the duty of the federal government that controls the security structure to do the needful. Ortom lamented the failure of the Buhari led federal government in tackling the crisis. In a TV interview monitored on Arise Television and Channels Television, Governor say the situation calls for serious concern.
Recently, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor answering questions to Journalists in Makurdi said the soldiers are on top of the situation. He was particular that it is not yet over but that the soldiers are gaining grounds.
However, youths across Benue state
appeal to their counterpart across the country to rise up and guard their respective communities. Tarpande Samuel noted that the youths must form security networks to help protect their domains. He also said it is obvious that the federal government alone cannot do it.
From the North to South, West to East, Nigerians are in fear. The people are certain that a declaration of state of emergency in the security sector might help. At the moment, they say the government at all levels is not living to its primary constitutional responsibility, which is the protection of lives and properties of citizens.
