Benue Rights Advocate Makes Case for Women

A Makurdi based legal practitioner and human rights advocate, JM Gbagyo esq has called on the government and people of goodwill to support women in the social, political and economic permutations in Benue State.

The NBA Secretary said this in a press release where he touched on other issues including the rise in cases of human right violations  in the state.

Barr. Gbagyo thanked Gov. Samuel Ortom for his service to the people of Benue. He also congratulated the Governor elect, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia and tasked him for adequate women inclusion in his administration.

The gender advocate frowned at a situation where only 4 women have been elected into the national and state assemblies from Benue State.

The statement reads:

“I like to plead with the incoming administration to consider adequate women inclusion for gender sensitivity as is the thinking of the modern world.

Let me also call on both men and women to support the few women in active leadership roles across the country. It is quite a step in the right direction for those who are already doing this, however we can do better.

“There has been a rise in human right abuses and violations especially of women. This should be condemned headlong by all of us, irrespective of social, political or economic background.”

The UN HeforShe Secretary in Benue State lamented on the cruel treatment of the vulnerable members of the society.

He said:

“Violations have led to the death of many victims within and around us. It is dehumanising as it is barbaric and must be checked for a better society.

“Some have died in the course of this inhuman treatment. The question is how much longer do we wait before we change our society from these negativity? Because there are countless issues on daily basis that are never reported. As I address you, someone is struggling with physical, emotional or psychological pains.”

The legal gentleman appreciated the media for its role in the society. The statement reads:

“Let me appreciate the organised  press for standing up to its bits. However, society looks up to you to do more, especially in the area of investigation; to talk to and for the people who do not have the voice.”

Gbagyo finally commiserated with the families of recent armed herders attacks in Otukpo and Guma local government areas. He called on the security agencies to do more in protecting lives and properties.
