Sexual Assault
Dantata Bawa 43 has allegedly raped a four-year-old Amina (not real name) in North Bank area of Makurdi the Benue state capital.
The Transmitter gathered that the incident took place Monday afternoon in the house of the suspect who lured the minor into his apartment and committed the act. The mother of the girl was away at the time the incidence tool place. The little girl according to her grandmother was playing in the neighbourhood when the man cornered her into his room.
Bawa is an artisan and is alleged to have prior cases of rape on minors in his area, according a source that prefers not to be named.
The suspect was arrested by the Police following a distressed call and he confessed to the crime when asked by press men.
The Coordinator of Benue Coalition of Human Rights Protection, (BCHRP), Jimmie Adzande, in a statement made available to newsmen in Makurdi, condemned to he act of babarism against kids and the vunerable members of the society.
The Coalition he also said is “following the case and will ensure that the suspect is accordingly prosecuted to serve as deterent.
The Coalition Coordinator is worried that cases of rape are on the rise in recent times. He called on stakeholders especially the Civil Society organisations, the security agencies and the media as well as the Nigerian Bar Association and FIDA to do more for women and children.
As at the time of this report, the suspect was still in custody awaiting arraignment in Court by the Police.
