A Call for Restraint and Moderation by the Association of Nigerian Authors

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) is deeply concerned about the unfolding events in Rivers State and urges all stakeholders to exercise restraint and moderation to prevent a detrimental spiral effect on the nation. We acknowledge the complexities of Nigeria’s democratic system, comprising the executive, judiciary and legislative branches, as well as the Local, State and Federal Governments.

As a foremost intellectual organisation, we in ANA believe that democracy’s intrinsic framework facilitates collaboration among these structures to bridge existing divides. However, prolonged conflicts can undermine democratic institutions. We must not forget the struggles that led to our current democrat
ic dispensation and instead work collectively towards a renewed vision for a stable and enduring democracy.

This vision is crucial for Nigeria’s progress and prosperity. We must prioritise the welfare of the people and adhere to constitutional principles. The recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR highlights the need for caution and restraint.

As we navigate this challenging situation, let us remember that our collective efforts can shape the future of our beloved nation, Nigeria.

Signed

Usman Oladipo Akanbi Ph.D, President

Dame Joan Oji, General Secretary
