The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Friday, September 05, 2025 met with families of security personnel who lost their lives in active service, pledging government’s unwavering support for their welfare and future.
The event, which held at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House Makurdi, brought together widows, children, security chiefs, and members of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA).
Governor Alia, after leading a minute of silence in honor of the fallen officers, described them as gallant men who paid the ultimate price to defend the peace and unity of Benue State and Nigeria.
“They died making the supreme sacrifice so that Benue remains Benue, and Nigeria remains united as a nation. Their memories will continue to be a blessing to us all,” he said.
The governor assured the widows and children of continuous government intervention, including educational support and empowerment programs.
He announced an immediate cash support of ₦5 million for each family of the 74 fallen heroes recorded between 2024 and 2025, while also directing the commissioners of education and humanitarian affairs to collaborate with POWA and security agencies to design long-term welfare strategies for the families.
Governor Alia further cautioned against negative narratives targeting security operatives on social media, urging citizens to appreciate and support the sacrifices of uniform men and women.
“The police, the army, and other security agencies are not our enemies. They sacrifice their comfort to give us peace. Let us work with them in synergy,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director General of Benue Homeland Security, Commodore Jacob Gbwamwuan (Rtd.), described the gesture as unprecedented in the history of Benue State.
He appreciated Governor Alia for extending a hand of compassion to the bereaved families, noting that the security personnel had lost their lives in the lines of duty between 2024 and 2025.
Speaking on behalf of security agencies, Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, commended the governor for his constant support, describing the initiative as a morale booster.
“This occasion motivates us all. Your Excellency has shown that the sacrifices of our colleagues will never be forgotten. We assure you of our renewed commitment to secure Benue State,” he stated.
In her remarks, Mrs. Ujunwa Emenari, wife of the Commissioner of Police and Chairperson of POWA, expressed gratitude on behalf of the widows and families of the slain officers.
She noted the harsh realities many widows and children face after losing their breadwinners and thanked the governor for his fatherly compassion.
“Your generosity today gives hope to families whose lives were shattered. May God bless you and strengthen you to continue this work of compassion,” she said.
Governor Alia further directed that service chiefs should also submit a list of security personnel that are currently injured during the course of their service to the state, assuring that the state government will cover their medical expenses.
