FLOOD VICTIMS: SEMA SOLICITS SUPPORT FROM THE MEDIA, CSOs

Benue State is one of the states currently witnessing flood disaster as a result of perennial downpour this year and the release of water from Lagdo Dam in Cameroun.

The Federal government had called on 12 affected states in Nigeria to relocate people in flood prone areas to highlands.Benue State is one of the affected states.

Statistics verified by the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA says a total of 116, 84 persons are affected in 12, 856 households, in 11 out of the 23 local government areas in the state. To this, Emmanuel Shior: ES, Benue SEMA said the Government has so far provided relief materials but that it is not enough. He called on the CSOs and NGOs to come in their areas of strength and assist the victims.

Medical experts submitted the health challenges associated with the flood. They are worried that the flood water is dangerous for consumption and called for attention of the Government as a matter of urgency.

The partners pledged their support for assistance in their areas of strength and suggested the way forward. Gloria Bai who spoke for NAPTIPP says it is proper to engage immediately.

Also, Thomas Unongu: Director Agric-Science at the Ministry of Agriculture, Makurdi says the long terms plans be put in place, since this is a yearly occurrence. He further says mechanised and improved Agriculture and fishing would help because most of the victims are farmers and fishermen.

Different NGOs and CSOs pledged their commitments as they split into various groups to chart the way forward under the lead of Helen Teghtegh.

This is a serious crisis that has also affected farmlands. As at the time of this report, 23 persons were confirmed dead in the flood disaster.
