In Makurdi, residents say cross-carpeting from one political party to another, is not helping Nigeria’s democracy.

Elections are here again and politicians are repeating their old tactics. One of these is defections; leaving one political party to another.

In Makurdi, residents say the idea is not for the good of the people, but for personal interest or benefits. Doosuur Iomun a student of the Benue State University said every politician mind only what they can feed and nothing else matters.

Other residents including Ugo Terkaa and James Tivfa said there is freedom of association, however the older politicians are teaching the younger ones, with bad examples. They call party men and women to learn from past mistakes and make the polity ideal. They condemned the idea and call on politicians to change that pattern.

From 1999, some politicians have cross-carpeted to almost all the major political parties to align their interests.

Back and forth, they make these journeys. And yet, the Socio-economic landscape of the country is still not yet near what it should be.

Makurdi residents say the populace are useful only during campaign seasons.
