SEARCH FOR COMMON GROUND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FJDP CHARGED CSOs, MEDIA ON BUILDING COALITIONS

In continuation with its series of Programmes under the tag- United in Security: A Collaborative Approach to Civilian Protection in Nigeria, Search for Common Ground in partnership with Foundation for Justice Development and Peace, held a 2-day “Coalition Building” workshop in Makurdi with stakeholders drawn from the Media, Civil Society Organisations, Community leaders as well as the clergy.

In his remarks, Chris Ogbonna, the Head of Office, North Central Region of Nigeria said, the essence of the workshop was to see how different groups can form a coalition in pursuit of a common goal; advocate against human rights violations. He said with these selected stakeholders, the essence can be achieved.

On his part, the Programme Manager, in charge of Adamawa and Benue States, Chorbe Joshua appreciated the partners who have continued to, together with Search execute series of programmes selected for the project. Mr. Joshua was emphatic that with feedbacks from communities, the programme is effective as it has helped many societies changed their narratives to the positive sides.

Joshua further said going forward, there will be more engagements to compliment and consolidate on the mapped-out plans for the 2 year Programme.

The Facilitator, Ada James Emmanuel gave his lectures on a number of topics bothering on human rights. Selected topics included: Coalition and network building, Police Professionalism Standards, Principles and rules of Police codes of conducts, Concept of Community Policing, Right based units and Police Accountability, Use of Force and rights violation in policing, Advocacy and Social Mobilisation, Community safety partnership model, Police Accountability Coordination model, action plan and strategy development etc.

These activities were conveyed through relevant objectives and methodologies, while the workshop lasted.

With interactive sessions, the stakeholders learnt and also added their voices to the aim and objectives of the Programme.

Some of the participants, J.M Gbagyo from CORAFID, Joy Itodo from BENGONET, Scholastica Hir of The Abuja Enquiry and Abifade Martins from Community Links, appreciated Search and her partners for the exposure. They said this has added to their knowledge and that they can better appreciate issues and concerns of human rights, in their respective assignments.

The participants formed a coalition in which they will meet on Tuesday, October 11 to fashion out a course and work as a team for results.

Search is an international organization, working tirelessly to ensure peace and mutual coexistence in communities affected by one form of human crisis or another. With insecurity and negative narratives in Nigeria, Search is in the country, to calm nerves and ensure a situation where humans irrespective of their class, region, religion or ethnicity, operate on a Common Ground.
